Insight

The prompt asks what you learned, so the essay has to leave the obstacle. Tell the hard moment, the next thing you did, and a later choice that shows the lesson is real. A trivial miss and a story that is only about blame both fail the prompt.

When to use this. Common App prompt 2 (2026–2027): “The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?” 250–650 words.

Guidance

  1. Pick a recoverable setback you had a part in, or a constraint you had to work inside.
  2. Spend few sentences on the setup. Spend the middle on what you did next.
  3. Name the lesson as a change in behavior, with a later moment that proves it.
  4. If the result is still unfinished, say so. Do not invent a victory.

Optional. Copy this into ChatGPT or a similar tool if you want a first draft. Replace the [PASTE] sections with your own material. The work stays in that tool; we do not save it here.

Rules: Do not invent employers, job titles, dates, metrics, team sizes, or outcomes. If something is missing, ask me or write [unknown]. Keep hedges such as "approximately" and "more than" exactly as I stated them. Never turn a qualitative result into a number.

Reshape one real incident into an essay draft. Use only the notes I paste. If a fact is missing, write [unknown] or ask me. Do not add a school, activity, metric, or outcome I did not state. One scene. First person. Keep my part visible.

This is the challenge, setback, or failure essay. Keep the setup short. End on what I did afterward and what I do differently now. Do not invent a later success.
