Insight
The essay is about your response. Name the specific thing someone did, why it surprised you, and what you have done since because of it. A thank-you note that never leaves their kindness does not show how the gratitude moved you.
When to use this. Common App prompt 4 (2026–2027): “Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?” 250–650 words.
Guidance
- Pick one act, not a list of mentors.
- Say what you expected, and why their act was different.
- Show the action their act led you to take.
- Keep their name and role accurate. Ask before you rely on a private story.

Optional. Copy this into ChatGPT or a similar tool if you want a first draft. Replace the [PASTE] sections with your own material. The work stays in that tool; we do not save it here.

Rules: Do not invent employers, job titles, dates, metrics, team sizes, or outcomes. If something is missing, ask me or write [unknown]. Keep hedges such as "approximately" and "more than" exactly as I stated them. Never turn a qualitative result into a number. Reshape one real incident into an essay draft. Use only the notes I paste. If a fact is missing, write [unknown] or ask me. Do not add a school, activity, metric, or outcome I did not state. One scene. First person. Keep my part visible. This is the gratitude essay. One person’s specific act, why it surprised me, and what I did because of it. The draft should still be about my response. Do not invent their motives. Word limit: [PASTE] Incident or parable (situation, what I was responsible for, what I did, the result, what I learned, what I did differently later): [PASTE] School, sponsor, or program, only if this answer must name one: [PASTE OR LEAVE BLANK]
