How do you answer the personal-growth essay?

Insight

An accomplishment, event, or realization is the spark, not the essay. Show who you were before it, what the moment made you see about yourself or other people, and what you did in the period of growth that followed. Put the trophy in one sentence if you mention it at all.

When to use this. Common App prompt 5 (2026–2027): “Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.” 250–650 words.

Guidance

  1. Choose the spark: a result, a day, or a realization. One is enough.
  2. Write the before in concrete terms, not “I was closed-minded.”
  3. Spend the essay on the stretch of time after the spark.
  4. Name the new understanding as something you can point to in how you treat people or do the work.

Optional. Copy this into ChatGPT or a similar tool if you want a first draft. Replace the [PASTE] sections with your own material. The work stays in that tool; we do not save it here.

Rules: Do not invent employers, job titles, dates, metrics, team sizes, or outcomes. If something is missing, ask me or write [unknown]. Keep hedges such as "approximately" and "more than" exactly as I stated them. Never turn a qualitative result into a number.

Reshape one real incident into an essay draft. Use only the notes I paste. If a fact is missing, write [unknown] or ask me. Do not add a school, activity, metric, or outcome I did not state. One scene. First person. Keep my part visible.

This is the personal-growth essay. One spark, then the period of growth and the new understanding. Do not write the essay as a list of honors.
