How do you answer “Why this major?”

Insight
Show that the interest is already underway. One class, project, or question that pulled you in is enough, followed by what you want to study next. A job title you hope to hold at 30 is not a reason for the major.
When to use this. A supplement that asks why this major, field, or area of study.
Guidance
- Start from a piece of work you have done in or near the field.
- Say what the work left unresolved.
- Name the kind of course or problem you want next, in the language of the field.
- If the school’s prompt also asks why there, add one sentence from the “why this college” notes. Otherwise leave the campus out.

Optional. Copy this into ChatGPT or a similar tool if you want a first draft. Replace the [PASTE] sections with your own material. The work stays in that tool; we do not save it here.
Prompt to copy
Rules: Do not invent employers, job titles, dates, metrics, team sizes, or outcomes. If something is missing, ask me or write [unknown]. Keep hedges such as "approximately" and "more than" exactly as I stated them. Never turn a qualitative result into a number. Reshape one real incident into an essay draft. Use only the notes I paste. If a fact is missing, write [unknown] or ask me. Do not add a school, activity, metric, or outcome I did not state. One scene. First person. Keep my part visible. This is a “why this major” supplement. Ground it in work I have already done. End on what I want to study next. Do not invent a career plan I did not describe. Word limit: [PASTE] Incident or parable (situation, what I was responsible for, what I did, the result, what I learned, what I did differently later): [PASTE] School, sponsor, or program, only if this answer must name one: [PASTE OR LEAVE BLANK]
