What is the STAR method?

Insight

STAR is Situation, Task, Action, Result: a way to answer “Tell me about a time…” so the story has context, your job in it, what you did, and what happened. Keep Situation and Task short. Spend the time on Action and Result. Use it for behavioral questions, not for every yes/no.

Guidance

  1. Situation: where and when, in one or two sentences.
  2. Task: what you were on the hook for — not the whole company.
  3. Action: what you specifically did. “We” hides you.
  4. Result: what changed. Use only real numbers.

Optional. Copy this into ChatGPT or a similar tool if you want a first draft. Replace the [PASTE] sections with your own material. The work stays in that tool; we do not save it here.

Rules: Do not invent employers, job titles, dates, metrics, team sizes, or outcomes. If something is missing, ask me or write [unknown]. Keep hedges such as "approximately" and "more than" exactly as I stated them. Never turn a qualitative result into a number.

Write this incident as Situation, Task, Action, Result. Keep S and T short. First person. If a result is missing, say [unknown] rather than inventing one.
